COMPUTER REFURBISHING

Since the mid 1980s we have been involved in refurbishing and distributing  used computers for free.  For us, and for those who have helped over the years, this is a stewardship ministry of time and abilities.

Used computers are donated to the program for recycling.  We completely strip down each box, clean, reassemble and test it, and then reload the operating system and any software that was donated with the unit.  The refurbished box is matched to a monitor, keyboard and mouse (usually these things come with the basic computer unit anyway) and than made available without cost to those unable to afford a computer.  Inoperable computers which cannot be economically repaired are stripped down and the parts tested and cataloged for use in repairing other computers--so nothing goes to waste.

Our priority for distribution to the needy is as follows:

  • High School Seniors and First Year College Students

  • Churches and Start-up Faith-Based Non-Profit Agencies

  • Seniors, Shut-ins and Physically Handicapped, especially those who can use a computer to supplement their limited income

  • Other Low-Income Families and Situations

Since beginning this stewardship ministry, we have received, refurbished and distributed more than 600 computers, many with printers.  In this timeframe more than 350 of the computers have been sent to churches, agencies and individuals in Appalachia.

This ministry is made possible by--and requires--donations of used equipment and software from thoughtful and generous folks like you.  Those who need a receipt for tax write-off purposes can be provided with a letter documenting the donation.  Those willing to donate their used computers and printers may contact us using the e-mail button found on the panel to the right.

Right now we have all the Pentium II and older types we can use because, unfortunately, much of the software available for purchase is simply not compatible with and will not run on the older machines.  Families who are given a computer are tempted to buy software they really cannot afford only to find that it will not work if their computer is an older model.  Because software products are normally not returnable, their money has been wasted.

The need exists--we have a waiting list--for Pentium III and newer types of computers.  When donating a computer, please take the time to track down original operating system disks, recovery disks and restore disks.  Without these software items a computer cannot be given out because computers will not work without an operating system.  Making copies of the Windows Operating System and other software is stealing, illegal and unethical. Because we refuse to pirate software and operating systems, the computer must sit idle until some generous individual comes along and donates funding to purchase an operating system.  So please, include the software with the hardware donation.  Computers will not run without a monitor, keyboard and a mouse, so please include these items with your donation if you have them.

To donate computer equipment and software click on the "TO DONATE USED COMPUTER EQUIPMENT CLICK HERE" link on the right panel and an e-mail will be generated.  Please include the type of computer, monitor, software, printer, etc., you would like to offer.  Indicate your need for a receipt.  We will respond to your e-mail offer--usually within 24 hours and we can work out the details of getting your equipment into the refurbishing program.

To request a refurbished computer or other equipment, please click on the "TO REQUEST A FREE COMPUTER CLICK HERE" button on the right panel and an e-mail will be generated.  The request can be for a church, non-profit agency, yourself or someone else who is in need.  Include your hardware needs, intended use and situation.  We will respond to your e-mail request--usually within 24 hours.  Please remember: the availability of computer equipment for distribution depends on donations.  A computer is not always available when requests are received.  Those requesting computer equipment are placed on the waiting list and served in the order in which the request was received.

Thank you for helping us to help others less fortunate.
